This is probably the most sciency word I have featured on the A Word on Vocabulary series. If you are a fan of science fiction or, I don’t know, you work in astrodynamics, then you’ll already know what it means. I am featuring Delta-V today to coincide with the launch of my new imprint, Delta-V Press.
Meaning: Delta-V (more correctly written as Delta-v) is a measurement in astrodynamics for the amount of energy needed to achieve orbital manoeuvres with a spacecraft. That’s about the extent of my ability to discuss real science. If you want more information, this Fandom article explains Delta-v better than I can.
Origin: Originating in the 1960s, Delta-v comes from the mathematical symbol Δ (the Greek letter Delta), meaning “variation”, and the mathematical symbol for velocity, which is a lowercase v.
Example: The NASA scientists were wary of the Delta-v budget for the planned manoeuvre.
I picked Delta-V Press as the name for my publishing imprint. It’s short, catchy, relates to science fiction, and lends itself to a neat logo design (see below). I chose the uppercase v for aesthetics. You may have noticed that I used a different imprint—Nixta Entertainment—for my short story, “A Miner’s Dream”, which is available as my newsletter giveaway. These details have since been updated, and now Delta-V Press will be my self-publishing imprint. The first major work to be published under the Delta-V logo will be Space Trip.
