I am committed to managing your Personal Information and respects your privacy.

I have adopted the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Privacy Act). The APPs govern the way in which I collect, use, disclose, store, secure and dispose of your Personal Information. Additionally, this site is compliant with EU GDPR cookie regulations. For more information, please see the Cookie Policy.

A copy of the Australian Privacy Principles may be obtained from the website of The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

What is Personal Information and Why Do I Collect It?

Personal Information is information or an opinion that identifies an individual. Personal Information I collect includes names and email addresses, generally for the purpose of responding to enquiries through the Contact Form.

This Personal Information is obtained in many ways, including contact forms (sending me an email and commenting on the website) and from third parties. I have no control over the  policies of linked websites or authorised third parties.

I collect your Personal Information for the primary purpose of advertising and marketing myself as a writer and my projects. I may also use your Personal Information for secondary purposes closely related to the primary purpose, in circumstances where you would reasonably expect such use or disclosure. You may unsubscribe from our mailing/marketing lists at any time, and also request that your personal information be struck from my records, except when such records must be kept (for example, when requested by justice departments).

When I collect Personal Information I will, where appropriate and where possible, explain to you why I am collecting the information and how I plan to use it.

Sensitive Information

Sensitive information is defined in the Privacy Act to include information or opinion about such things as an individual’s racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, membership of a political association, religious or philosophical beliefs, membership of a trade union or other professional body, criminal record or health information.

You should know that I DO NOT collect any of this information.

What Personal Data I Collect

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact Forms

I need to collect information for contact forms so I can respond to you. Your name and email address are the only pieces of information I collect through contact forms.

Cookies

The website uses cookies to enhance your experience, increase the functionality of the site, and improve content. For more information, please see the Cookie Policy.

Analytics

I use Google Analytics and other analytics services to help me analyse how you interact with the site. These analytics services use cookies to collect and store information such as how often you visit the site, what pages you visit, and what other sites you used prior to coming to the Site. I use the information I get from these analytics services only to improve the site’s functionality and content.

Embedded Content From Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Third Parties

Where reasonable and practicable to do so, I will collect your Personal Information only from you. However, in some circumstances I may be provided with information by third parties. In such a case I will take reasonable steps to ensure that you are made aware of the information provided to me by the third party.

Children

Please note that I do not intentionally gather Personal Information of children under the age of thirteen. Since it is just about impossible to know the age of those who use the site, I cannot guarantee whether I have or have not gathered this information about a person younger than thirteen. If you come to know of an instance where this has happened, please let me know and I will delete the child’s Personal Information.

How Long I Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on the website (if any), I also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Disclosure of Personal Information

Your Personal Information may be disclosed in a number of circumstances including the following:

  • Third parties where you consent to the use and disclosure; and
  • Where required or authorised by law.

Security of Personal Information

Your Personal Information is stored in a manner that reasonably protects it from misuse and loss and from unauthorized access, modification or disclosure.

When your Personal Information is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was obtained, I will take reasonable steps to destroy or permanently de-identify your Personal Information.

I do not sell your data, nor do I pass it on freely to marketing companies. Your data will not be shared by anyone unless required by law.

Access to Your Personal Information

You may access the Personal Information I hold about you and to update and/or correct it, subject to certain exceptions. If you wish to access your Personal Information, please use the Contact Form to request access.

In order to protect your Personal Information I may require identification from you before releasing the requested information.

Maintaining the Quality of your Personal Information

It is important to me that your Personal Information is up to date. I will  take reasonable steps to make sure that your Personal Information is accurate, complete and up-to-date. If you find that the information I have is not up to date or is inaccurate, please advise me as soon as practicable so I can update my records.
